Upcoming Hands-on Herbal Workshops and Herb Walks
3rd Tuesday of the month, June-September (6/18, 7/16, 8/20, 9/17), 9-10:30 AM
Come for a walk with Brighid Doherty at Scott’s Landing Preserve and learn how plants are used to nourish health and heal common ailments. Brighid will explain how to identify, ethically harvest and prepare medicinal plants. Different plants will be addressed every month, as they each reach their prime harvest time. Dandelion, Plantain, Yarrow, Sumac, Hawthorn, Rose, Goldenrod, Valerian and Hypericum are some of the many plants that will be discovered through the season. All ages are welcome. We will walk rain or shine. $5 suggested donation to the IHT.

Come walk around the Deer Isle Hostel grounds and discover the edible and medicinal plants that grow abundantly in our region. We will talk about how to ethically and intentionally harvest wild food and medicine. Why is it important to eat wild food that grows around us? What are best ways to harvest herbs for various medicinal preparations? You will make and start a foraging journal to take home and harvest a wild salad that we will share at the end of our walk.

There are many ways to make medicine with water and herbs. We will make cold and hot teas, infusions, decoctions, syrups, compresses and steams. What herbs are best used in water extracts? How do you determine which water extract is best for the occasion of need? How are plants dried and stored for use in tea? You will make an herbal syrup to take home and use.

Tinctures and elixirs are alcohol extracts of a medicinal plants. Why do we make them and how are they used? What are the best plants to use? We will make tinctures using the folkloric and weight-to-volume methods. You will make a tincture with a plant that you harvest to take home and use.

Learn how to make oils infused with aromatic and healing herbs. Then learn how to turn them into healing salves used to heal a variety of skin afflictions. What plants are best to use in what oils? You will make an herbal salve to take home and use.

Oxymels are herbal infused vinegar-honey blends. We will infuse vinegar and honey with herbs, both together and separately. What herbs are best to use in these medicines? What healing properties do the oxymels promote? How do you incorporate infused vinegars and honeys into health care? You will make an oxymel to take home and use.
